Theater reception features Ballet Solecito

LAKEPORT — On July 16, the Soper-Reese fundraising committee hosted a reception for its donors at the theater. Guests were treated to champagne and hors d”oeuvres in the theatre lobby. Theater manager John Ross spoke to the guests about the state of the renovation project. The committee is still raising the needed funds to finish the project. Priority was given to the completion of the “Green Room,” dressing area for performers including handicapped-accessible restrooms. This phase needs approximately $70,000 to complete and would be a major step in accommodating performers. Donors also got a look at the newly planted courtyard, thanks to the volunteer efforts of the Lakeport Kiwanis.

Following the theater project update, Ballet Solecito presented several traditional dances on the stage. The group is comprised of the Ledesma, Ortega and Duarte families. Ten dancers participated, ranging from ages 4 to 18 years old.

Ballet Solecito has danced all over Lake County, mostly for Cinco de Mayo events. The dancers perform at Christmas events for the Catholic Church. They have also danced for Kelseyville schools and in Ukiah. Costumes are based on traditional Mexican dance costumes. The boys” white charro suits are authentic outfits from Mexico. Girls” skirts were made by Isabel Cruz.

King is signing ?Fit Food for Foodies”

LAKEPORT — Peggie King, author of “Fit Food for Foodies,” will sign copies of her cookbook, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Aug. 12 at Catfish Books, located at at 1013 11th St. in Lakeport.

According to King, “Fit Food for Foodies” targets a healthy and beneficial way of eating with recipes that readers will want to cook all of the time. King said she has read many books on healthy eating and detoxification. She incorporates this knowledge into the recipes in “Fit Food for Foodies.” The recipes have been specially written to suit systemic detoxification of the body on multiple levels. King said that the recipes are quick and so wonderful that readers will never know that they are eating “healthy food.”

“There has been a lot of media attention lately about obesity linked to the Western diet heavily influenced by processed foods,” King said. “The problem afflicts millions of people who have adopted a western diet and can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, adult onset diabetes and high cholesterol. Many are allergic to foods such as wheat and dairy, knowingly or unknowingly. It is difficult to find processed foods that do not contain some amount of wheat, dairy, or sugar.”

“Fit Food for Foodies” sells for $29.95 and has more than 60 detox-diet friendly recipes that King said are a result of her own experiences with eating in a way to cleanse the body of toxins including old stored fat. Recipes are gluten free, dairy free and sugar free. Call Catfish Books at 263-4454 for more information about the event.
