When”s the last time you were in the Soper-Reese Community Theatre? If it”s been more than a year ago, then get in here now because you”re missing out on one of your best community assets. Things have been happening that will amaze you.

Have you seen the new courtyard on the Martin Street side of the building? Very classy with crepe myrtle and pear trees, set off by Wheeler”s dwarf and star jasmine. What a charming place to meet friends and enjoy pre-show and intermission refreshments. Next time you see Lakeport Kiwanis International club members, please thank them. They did the digging and planting and huffing and puffing, putting together the landscaping for this distinctive courtyard.

There”s more news. On July 16, the Soper-Reese Fundraising Committee hosted a reception for its very best donors where theater Manager John Ross explained the state of the renovation project, outlining plans for the dressing rooms, including handicapped-accessible restrooms. Can you believe that this theater can produce shows with casts of 40-plus without dressing rooms? Seventy-thousand dollars can correct this lamentable situation. That might sound like a lot, but in the scheme of theater capital improvements, it”s really quite modest. We believe the funds can be raised in a few short months (and your donation, in any amount, can make it happen).

The great treat for that evening was a performance by our own Lake County folklorico group, Ballet Solecito. Ten dancers, from 18 to only 4-1/2 years old, charmed the crowd as they performed traditional Mexican dances.

In the mood for a fabulous night on the town? The Soper-Reese is your place. On Oct. 16, party down with your friends and the volunteers at the Harvest Moon Dinner & Dance, the theater”s annual benefit. Sit at your table right on the theater floor and enjoy a superlative dinner by the Blue Wing Saloon and dancing to the big band sounds of the Mendocino Jazz Band. Call our box office for more information.

If you”re looking for an evening of top quality entertainment at a very reasonable price, don”t miss the second annual Singer-Songwriter Contest, sponsored by KPFZ 88.1, on Aug. 29. And check the Arts & Entertainment listings for more shows coming up in August. There”s something for everyone at the Soper-Reese. See you there!
