LAKE COUNTY — Hoberg”s Resort might soon become a film and music venue as a group of investors bought the property in late July.
Cobb Mountain partners plan to restore the historical site and open it in phases starting in the next three to six months, said manager Dan Nelson.
Nelson said plans are still in the works but they want to create something “like it was back in the day.”
“I think the history was one of the big selling points,” he said.
Hoberg”s Resort grew from a vacationing rest stop in 1885, attracting movie stars and millionaires, to become Northern California”s largest privately owned resort in 1950.
Mary Jane Fagalde, a planning consultant for the project, said she”s lived in the county for more than 45 years and is happy to help redevelop the resort where she used to go horseback riding as a child.
“I remember my parents talking about the dances up there,” Fagalde said.
“It”s been a huge piece of Lake County history,” she said.
County administrator Kelly Cox said he was excited when he heard the resort sold.
“I think it”s great,” Cox said. “I think we”ve got a renaissance of old resorts at hand.”
Nelson said they want to shoot films on site, offer lodging and possibly have film and music festivals.
“It would bring a tremendous amount of jobs and people from out of the area,” Nelson said.
The resort is already working with two movie companies that might film in Lake County, one a horror remake and the other a drama, he said.
Nelson said the team of investors and management are looking at the property in detail to develop a plan and get permitting before starting to remodel.
The resort is on 52 acres and includes a main lodging facility, cottages and other buildings.
