UKIAH — After taking a week off for the Redwood Empire Fair, auto racing returns to the Ukiah Speedway on Saturday night with the Airport Auto Brokers Late Models making their third of four appearances on the quarter-mile paved oval. Joining the Late Models will be the North State Racing Association modifieds, bombers and street stocks.

In addition to the regular racing card, a lucky race fan will be chosen to ride around the track in a modified at full speed with 11-time champion Bob Strauss of Lucerne. Strauss” modified was on display during the Redwood Empire Fair last weekend in Ukiah where fairgoers had the opportunity to sign up to win a free ride. Mo Schulman of Mendocino was the lucky winner. A second ticket will be drawn Saturday night at the race track to give another race fan the opportunity to experience the speeds these modified cars are capable of going.

Strauss has the only modified in the country equipped with a passenger seat. Bomber driver Shelby Helm took a ride with Strauss last year and described it as “a bomber on steroids.” The most famous person to get a ride in the car was celebrity Jamie Hynemen, star of the popular TV show “Mythbusters.”

Gates open at 4 p.m. at the Ukiah Speedway and racing begins at 6:30 p.m. Call the speedway office at 274-1354 for more information or visit the Web site at www.UkiahSpeedway.com.
