LUCERNE — Monitoring and mop up continued Friday on a fire that ignited Thursday evening in the northern foothills Lucerne.

According to Northshore Fire Protection District (NFPD) Battalion Chief Steve Hart, the blaze was caused by a turkey vulture that got into high tension power lines.

Response was requested at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday.

Hart said the fire was considered contained in about two hours. The fire was situated in a dry grass area with heavy oak and pine trees with steep terrain on Phillips Ranch at Leslie Road and Leslie Place. The fire burned between three to five acres, Hart said.

NFPD responded with four engines, two water tenders, two chief officers and about 18 personnel. CALFIRE responded with a chief officer, five engines, two hand crews, two dozers, three air tankers, a helicopter and numerous personnel.

CALFIRE units remained on scene continuing mop up and monitoring procedures until mid afternoon Friday. A NFPD water tender was also out on the fire until Friday afternoon.
