LAKEPORT — A prosecutor said Friday in court that the victim in an attempted murder case is “going sideways from what he originally told officers.”

Chief deputy district attorney Rich Hinchcliff said the victim, Glenn Jenkins, might incriminate himself if he testifies Tuesday in the preliminary hearing against Daniel Beaty. Judge Richard Martin ordered an attorney to be present to represent Jenkins during the hearing.

Beaty, 35, of Lakeport allegedly shot Jenkins, 36, of Willits multiple times May 3 at a home in Lucerne.

Beaty is charged with attempted murder, assault with a firearm, burglary, being a felon in possession of a firearm, threats to commit a crime resulting in death and obstructing or resisting a public officer.

Public defender for Beaty, Jacob Zamora, said Jenkins would need to be transported from the Lake County Jail to the courthouse for the hearing.

Jenkins is in custody for pleading no contest to felony importing, selling or keeping a weapon and misdemeanor possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, to which he pleaded guilty.

Hinchcliff and Zamora said the preliminary hearing could take half a day.

Beaty will return to court 9 a.m. Tuesday in Department 3 for his preliminary hearing.

On May 21, Martin denied Beaty”s request for bail and kept him on a no-bail hold at the Lake County Jail because he said Beaty allegedly shot Jenkins multiple times, has a lengthy rap sheet, could serve life in prison and performed poorly on parole in the past.
