Last year in August my daughter-in-law was in a traffic accident on South Main Street She was exiting the parking lot by Costless and was hit broadside by oncoming traffic. The damage was at the midsection just behind the driver”s seat, barely missing her. The line of sight at this exit is blocked by two trees and a hedge.
I wrote a letter to the city council, asking that the hedge and trees be pruned back to improve the line of sight. I also asked that several other exits be corrected on Main Street, Bevins Street and 11th Street.
This project was brought to the attention of the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee and placed on the Nov. 12, 2009 meeting agenda. My suggestions and requests for mitigation were approved and the project was given to the City Engineer, Scott Harter. Nine and half months have passed and no action has been taken. Why not? This project is in limbo, and every day drivers take their chances at exits at the post office, Costless, Grocery Outlet and Umpqua Bank and the businesses on Bevins Street. The drivers risk their lives at the crest of the hill on Bevins.
