CLEARLAKE — The filing period for candidacy in the race for the Clearlake City Council closed on Wednesday. A total of nine people will be vying for two open seats on the council in the November 2 election.
“This is the most candidates I”ve ever seen in a Clearlake City Council race,” Clearlake Mayor Judy Thein said.
Two seats will open on the council in November with the expiring terms of council members Chuck Leonard and Roy Simons, neither of whom are running for re-election.
Clearlake City Council candidates in the Nov. 2010 election include:
? Raymond N. Brady is a resident of 11th Street. According to his campaign statement he served the City of Clearlake as police officer for more than seven years. He is a graduate of Mendocino College with Associate of Science and Associate of Arts degrees.
“In tough fiscal times, we need ways to develop the resources we already have and rely on less outside sources for help. As a military veteran, I traveled extensively throughout the world and the United States. While visiting countries and communities with similar challenges, I witnessed teamwork and cooperation at its best. I know that I posses the skills, knowledge and ability to help lead this city in a positive direction. Moving forward will take more than an individual; it will take an entire village.” ? Raymond N. ? Joey Luiz is a resident of 13th Street. According to his campaign statement, if elected Luiz will hold town hall style meetings and frequent round table discussions with citizens. He states that he believes strongly in establishing community “buy-in” on all government projects and policies. He also states that the city has done nothing to invest in youth.
“I have and will work to change that as I know firsthand the challenges facing Clearlake”s young people. ? Bill Perkins is a resident of the Clearlake Park area. He is a realtor and currently serves on the Clearlake Planning Commission. According to his campaign statement he is a graduate of CSU Chico in Computer Science and National University of Sacramento with a Masters Degree in software engineering.
“I”m finishing up my sixth year as a planning commissioner, my second year on the Redevelopment Advisory Committee, member of the Economic Development Committee and a member on the Clearlake Vision Task Force. We worked to identify how we would envision the city 20 years in the future. My goals are: to make Clearlake the Regional Shopping Center of Lake County, Redevelopment of Lakeshore Drive, and more sport fields, activities, and parks for children and adults alike.” ? ? Jim Scholz is a businessman and a 30-year resident of Clearlake. According to his campaign statement, he has attended Clearlake City Council meetings for the past three and half years, was member of the Clearlake Vision Task Force and is the chairman of the Redevelopment Advisory Committee.
“I want to see our City grow. I want to see Redevelopment Projects underway, roads being paved, Lakeshore Drive improvements, a retail shopping center at the old airport property, and residents and tourists enjoying our wonderful City and lake.” Jim Scholz, campaign statement exert
? Jeri Spittler is a business owner on Lakeshore Drive and a 20-year resident of Clearlake. According to her campaign statement she wants to make the city prosperous for everyone who lives and works in Clearlake. She would like to fulfill the blueprint of the Clearlake Vision Task Force.
“Now it”s time to put my skills to work for the whole community, as I did by spearheading the June Grassroots Redevelopment Project that turned a decaying eyesore into a beautiful building. ? Frank Taylor is a resident of Madrone Street. According to his campaign statement he stands for teamwork, patriotism, cooperation, progress and ecology. Taylor has a background in media and marketing and currently produces “The Outlook” newspaper.
“I have been a successful businessman in Lake County for 12 years and have a unique perspective on city issues. I am a senior advocate, activist for youth, those less fortunate and ecology.
