LAKE COUNTY — As the first day of school approaches for a number of students and with others who are already back in the classroom, California Highway Patrol warns drivers to look out for buses, traffic and children.
The Lakeport Unified School District starts class Wednesday. Konocti Unified School District students go back to class Monday. At the Kelseyville Unified School District, class starts Sept. 7. Upper Lake High School, Upper Lake Elementary School and Lucerne Elementary started classes Aug. 18. Middletown Unified School District started Aug. 17.
CHP reminds drivers to pay attention to school buses making stops and transporting students. If a bus is stopped with red crossing lights on, drivers going both directions must stop until the bus driver turns off the red lights.
Officer Steve Tanguay said CHP recommends people slow down for school zones, keep a high visual horizon and not talk on cell phones or text.
“Just slow down and be aware,” Tanguay said.
All school zones have a speed limit of 25 mph. “The safety of the school children of our community is everyone”s responsibility,” CHP reported.
