UPPER LAKE — South Fork scored with a minute to play in stoppage time to earn a 1-1 tie with the Upper Lake Cougars in non-league varsity girls” soccer action Saturday in Upper Lake.
It was the season opener for the Cougars (0-0-1), who took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a Zania Esqueda goal. Upper Lake held that advantage until South Fork”s Baby Brown scored during stoppage time.
“We had three or four injuries during the game and the refs put two minutes of overtime on the clock or we would have won,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said.
“For a first game, I thought we held up pretty well,” Sheets said. “My defense did a pretty good job keeping them down at the midfield.”
South Fork only had three shots on goal compared to Upper Lake”s nine.
Among the standouts for the Cougars were Amber Sheets, Jamie Henry, Tanya Carter and freshman Megan Wold.
“I though Megan did really well this being her first year,” Sheets said.
A good-sized crowd cheered on the Cougars in their home opener, according to Sheets.
“That always helps,” he said. “The girls were pretty pumped up.”
Upper Lake hosts defending North Central League I North champion Middletown today at 4:30 p.m. It”s the season opener for the visiting Mustangs.
