MIDDLETOWN — Brittany Cash and Kylie Agapoff scored first-half goals, more than enough for the Middletown defense in a 4-1 non-league varsity girls” soccer win over the Cloverdale Eagles on Thursday in Middletown.
“Our starting defense was solid,” Middletown co-coach Lee Hoage said. “Kimmi Klewe and Maddie Kucer played great.”
Klewe plays fullback for the Mustangs (2-0) and Kucer is the team”s stopper.
Middletown went up 3-0 on a penalty kick by freshman Hannah Diaz, who also assisted on Cash”s and Agapoff”s goals, in the second half. Cloverdale scored to make it 3-1 before Middeltown”s Tania Nance added an insurance goal later in the half.
“It took awhile to break ”em down,” Hoage said of the Eagles” defense. “But we continued to create some opportunities and Cash”s goal kind of changed momentum.”
Middletown had many more scoring opportunities, according to Hoage, but had trouble finishing off plays.
“That”s one of the things I want to work on,” Hoage said.
Middletown did have one goal called back in the second half on a questionable offsides penalty, according to Hoage.
The Mustangs return to action next Thursday at home against Calistoga.
In other girls” soccer action Thursday:
Clear Lake 2, Roseland Prep 2 (tie)
At Lakeport, after assisting on an Amely Ballesteros goal that tied the score at 2 with three minutes left, Clear Lake”s Briana Dutcher just missed a goal with a minute remaining and the Cardinals had to settle for a draw against Roseland Prep, a charter school in Santa Rosa.
“Roseland Prep is a good team,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “They”re a charter school and like Sonoma Academy and others, they get better and better every year.”
Roseland Prep beat Clear Lake 3-2 last season.
Each team scored a goal in the first half. After Roseland Prep went up 1-0, Telia Paskaly answered for the Cardinals with four minutes left in the first half to tie it.
Roseland Prep pushed in front midway through the second half before Ballesteros got the Cardinals (1-4-2) back even.
Standouts for the Cardinals were Ballesteros on offense, Dutcher in the midfield and keeper Darian Ottolini and defender Emily Norwood on defense. Norwood was promoted from the junior varsity team to replace senior Jasmine Flores, who will miss the remainder of the season for health reasons.
“We”re continuing to take steps forward,” Larrea said. “We played much better than we did on Tuesday (an 8-0 win over Kelseyville).”
