KELSEYVILLE — Oscar Martinez had a hat trick in the second half, part of a four-goal outing, as the Kelseyville Knights roared past the Upper Lake Cougars 10-0 in a non-league varsity boys” soccer game on Tuesday in Kelseyville.

Martinez, an All-League forward for the Knights a year ago, scored late in the first half as the Knights built a 4-0 halftime lead. His final three goals came within an 11-minute span in the second half as Kelseyville improved to 1-0-1 on the season.

“He”s going now,” Kelseyville coach Eduardo Ledesma said of Martinez, who also assisted on another Knights score.

Cristian Macias scored twice for Kelseyville while Luis Rodriguez, Jorge Aguilera, Jordy Mitre and Wencesao Rojas had one goal each. Cesar Arroyo picked up two assists.

Upper Lake kept Kelseyville off the scoreboard until the 15th minute of the first half.

Besides forward Martinez, Kelseyville midfielders Rojas and Macias also had big games for the Knights as they kept pushing the ball onto Upper Lake”s side of the field and feeding the forwards, according to Ledesma.

“They did great,” he said. “We pretty much controlled the ball the entire game.”

Standouts for the Knights on defense were Oscar Lopez and Arnulfo Vargas.

Upper Lake is 0-2.

Girls” soccer

Clear Lake 5, Willits 2

At Lakeport, the Clear Lake Cardinals scored four unanswered goals in the second half ? one each by Amely Ballesteros, Telia Paskaly, Nadine Bradley and Briana Dutcher ? to beat the Willits Wolverines in non-league girls” soccer action at Don Owens Stadium.

Paskaly also had a goal in the first half for the Cardinals, who trailed 2-1 after one half.

“Willits was much better than I heard they were,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “They certainly played us tough,” Larrea said.

Willits had only five shots on goal for the game but scored twice in the first half, both times on shots by Monica Guitterez.

While several Cardinals turned in solid efforts, Larrea said Chelo Lundquist-Krag”s play in the midfield stood out.

“She was absolutely outstanding getting the to the wings and the forwards,” Larrea said.

All three of Clear Lake”s forwards ?Paskaly, Ballesteros and Dutcher ? scored, giving the Cardinals the balance they”re looking for on offense.

“I was real pleased with that,” Larrea said.

Two other standouts were sweeper Bradley and stopper Emily Norwood.

Volleyball

Fort Bragg def. Upper Lake

At Upper Lake, first-match jitters took a toll on the Upper Lake Cougars, who lost their season opener 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 to the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in non-league volleyball action.

“It was one of those matches where it was who made the fewest errors and not who made the most kills,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said.

As an example of their uneven play, the Cougars (0-1) had 19 kills in the match but also 19 hitting errors. At the service line, Upper Lake had nine aces and 10 service errors.

“You”re not going to win doing that,” Coatney said.

One Upper Lake player — setter Crystal Mendoza — did have a strong first match.

“She had one setting error out of 50 attempts,” Coatney said. “She did a great job.”

Katherine Edmonds led Upper Lake with six kills.

St. Vincent def. Middletown

At Petaluma, Middletown dropped the first two games, won the next two but ended up on the wrong end of a 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 24-16, 15-7 decision to the St. Vincent Mustangs.

“I think we just ran out of steam,” Middletown coach Suzanne Riccio said of Middletown”s comeback from a 2-0 deficit.

Angela Gattoni”s 11 kills and Rachel Sutton”s seven kills and five aces paced Middletown.

“Very strong all the way around for those two,” Riccio said.

Jamie Ridgeway led Middletown with seven aces.
