LAKEPORT — A councilman and the chief of police discussed laws about cars yielding for pedestrians in crosswalks Tuesday during the eight-minute Lakeport City Council meeting that had no issues posted on the agenda.

Councilman Bob Rumfelt questioned whether pedestrians still have the right of way if they step into a crosswalk with their head down, reading a newspaper or talking on the phone.

Chief Kevin Burke said vehicles are supposed to yield for pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks.

“Pedestrians have to exhibit due care,” Burke said. “You don”t get to run out in front of cars.”

Councilmen passed the consent agenda Tuesday in City Hall with no discussion. Councilwoman Suzanne Lyons was absent. No members of the public came forward for citizen input and the open meeting was finished in less than 10 minutes.
