LAKE COUNTY ? During Wednesday”s meeting of the Respect for All project task force, committee members discussed a continued need for adult volunteers during Challenge Day presentations at Lower Lake and Clear Lake high school campuses.
Co-founded in 1987 by Yvonne and Rich Dutra St. John, Challenge Day asks communities to “Imagine a school where every child feels safe, loved and celebrated … where bullying, violence and other forms of oppression are things of the past. This is the work of Challenge Day.”
The high-energy program leads participants through a series of exercises that emphasize shared experiences. According to Amy Osborn, Challenge Day development committee chair on the Respect for All task force, the overall goals of Challenge Day are to increase personal power and self esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression.
Challenge Day presentations are scheduled for Sept. 20 and 21 at Clear Lake High School and for Sept. 22 and 23 at Lower Lake High School. Volunteers need only commit to a single day.
Osborn is asking adult volunteers to be on the Lower Lake campus from 7:45 a.m. until 4 p.m. No training is necessary, other than a morning check-in meeting. Lunch will be provided and comfortable clothing is suggested.
At Clear Lake High School, organizer June Wilson is requesting that adult volunteers arrive at 8 a.m. and stay for the entire day, until 3:45 p.m. Lunch and drinks will be provided.
