MIDDLETOWN– Salesian had more than 400 yards in the first half alone, leading 42-30 at intermission. Amazingly, though, M”town led 52led 52-49 in the fourth quarter. But very briefly. The Pride”s davlon Mize ran the ensuing kickoff back 80 yards for a stand-up touchdown.
It was one of three kickoff returns for touchdowns. The Mustang”s Jereomy Hoefer returned two kickoffs for touchdowns of 89 and 94 yards after Salesian scores in the first half.
The Mustangs put up a valiant fight before losing for the fourth time in five season openers against Salsian. Ironically, if the Mustangs hadn”t failed to convert on their first five PAT attempts, the outcome might have been different. For small consolation Middletown actually outscored Salesian in the second half.
Middletown obviously suffered from the loss of Jake Davis who”ll miss another five to six weeks from a broken jaw sustained at practice a week before the opener. Still the Mustangs could delight in the performance of first-year varsity tailback David Pike who scored all three Middletown touchdowns in the second half as well as the play of first year varsity quarterback Kyle Brown. But the Mustangs simply could not stop Pride that scored six of the seven times they put the ball in play in the first half.
Indicative of their offensive might six different Salesian players scored their touchdowns.
