Poetry Out Loud recitation contest in fourth year
LAKE COUNTY — For the fourth year, the Lake County Arts Council will participate in Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation contest that is sponsored by the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
Students in grades nine through 12 have an opportunity to memorize selected poetry and recite it in a competition that begins in the classroom, moves to the school level, a county-wide competition and a state competition with the state winner proceeding, with all expenses paid, to a national competition in Washington, D.C. Scholarship dollars and school awards are made at the state and national levels.
Students” recitations are evaluated for the cadence and the interpretation of the poem in voice and posture. Lake County was represented in the state competition last year by Mellany Watson.
Michele Krueger will again take the lead on bringing this program to the schools of Lake County. Anyone who wishes to participate in the program, student, teacher, or support person should contact Krueger at michelekr@mchsi.com. Oct. 1 First Friday Fling invites creativity
LAKEPORT — Main Street Gallery and the Lake County Arts Council invite those who at one time or another have thought they would like to try their hand in creating a painting and those more experienced artists who would like to create something in collage or an abstract canvas to bring their creativity to the Oct. 1 First Friday Fling.
Participants will have an opportunity to help create two 4-foot by 4-foot canvases. One will be a quilt design collage where participants can complete their own 8-inch by 8-inch design square. The other will be an abstract canvas to which participants can add their own creative touches to complete the canvas.
Canvases and materials will be available for participants to add their creative expressions during regular gallery business hours beginning Oct. 1 until Oct. 30.
The completed canvases will be exhibited until the Nov. 5 First Friday Fling, at which time they will be put up for auction.
For more information, call the Main Street Gallery at 263-6658 and check back at the gallery often to see what has been added to the canvases.
