Barbara (Mallinen) Armanino, “Barb,” is heroically battling breast cancer. It has been with exceptional courage and grace that she has undergone chemo-therapy and will soon begin radiation treatment. Her prognosis is excellent and, while physically she is claiming victory, financially her struggles have only just begun. She has worked full-time her entire adult life and has always carried health insurance, but her out-of-pocket costs for this battle are astronomical and continue to escalate.
This could happen to any of us. It could happen to anyone of our mothers, sisters, daughters or friends. The breast cancer statistics are frightening. About one in eight women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer throughout the course of a lifetime. With statistics like these, you will know someone who will be diagnosed. I have lived in this county most of my life, as has Barbara, and time and time again I have watched as this powerful community has pulled together for one of our own. We are asking that you do this now for Barbara.
Please join us on Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. as we gather at 1811 Riggs Road in Lakeport for a benefit potluck in Barbara”s honor. We will be holding a raffle with fabulous prizes. Some that include a professional photography session, Web design, a handmade quilt and construction labor. Raffle tickets will be available at the door or can be purchased in advance by contacting Linda at 263-1086. If you prefer to make a monetary donation you may do so by contacting Linda as well.
Just as we couldn”t expect one woman to beat cancer without a team of medical and emotional support, we cannot expect Barbara to bear the burden of these expenses without a team of financial support. Let”s be that team.
