LAKEPORT — The Lake County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to stay the order of destruction placed on a local Labrador/rottweiler mix called “Bear.”

The destruction order was placed on Bear after a July 6 incident in which Bear escaped from the property of its owner, Gerald Lindquist. Lindquist was hospitalized at the time of Bear”s escape.

The dog had been required to remain on its owner”s property, unless escorted by an owner while wearing a leash and muzzle, in compliance with a vicious dog order.

The vicious dog order was placed on Bear after a June 28 incident in which Bear attacked two other dogs.

The BOS had temporarily suspended the destruction order on the condition that the owner secure a dog trainer and provide proof of the dog”s training progress.

Sherry Boyer, owner of The Dog House Inn, a kennel and training facility in Gilroy, appeared before the BOS on Tuesday and showed a video of Bear under various training conditions.

The video demonstrated enough evidence of training improvement to support the stay the destruction order, according to Supervisor Rob Brown.

The stay is contingent on Bear”s continued training progress and the owner may be required to periodically provide proof of that progress

Supervisor Brown said of the destruction order that there was “no reason to consider it not permanently lifted.”

Bear will remain at Boyer”s kennel while its progress is monitored.
