ST. HELENA — Clear Lake held a 1-0 lead at halftime before St. Helena rallied for a 3-1 victory in North Central League I South girls” soccer action on Thursday afternoon in St. Helena.

“We played one of our better first halves of the season and one of our poorer second halves,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said.

Telia Paskaly”s goal midway through the first half gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, one that held up until the Saints went on a scoring binge midway through the second half.

“They scored three goals in four minutes,” Larrea said of the Saints. “We”re a young team and we kind of lost our composure. We got it back again.”

Clear Lake (2-2 South, 7-8-2 overall) missed a couple of scoring opportunities early in the second half.

“We could have gone up 2-0 or 3-0 and that might have changed the outcome,” Larrea said.

In other soccer action Thursday:

Cloverdale 3, Upper Lake 0

At Upper Lake, Cloverdale jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and went on to shut out the Upper Lake Cougars in NCL I South action.

“They had two goals on the board in the first five to 10 minutes,” Upper Lake coach Mike Sheets said.

Cloverdale led 3-0 after the first half.

Upper Lake, which had six shots on goal, nearly broke through late in the game on a shot by freshman Bethany Rymel, but the Cloverdale keeper was able to knock it down.

Upper Lake keeper Annie Martinez had 16 saves.

Middletown 12, Lower Lake 0

At Lower Lake, the Middletown Mustangs improved to 3-0 in the NCL I North standings and 10-1-1 overall with a lopsided victory over the Lower Lake Trojans.

Kylie Agapoff led the Middletown scoring parade with four goals and Tanya Nance had two. Also scoring were Alicia Solomon, Brittany Cash, Paloma Colacion, Ashley Hart, Karina Vargas and Leslie Preciado.

Volleyball

Lower Lake def. Kelseyville

At Lower Lake, the Lower Lake Trojans improved to 2-0 in NCL I North play with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-13 win over the Kelseyville Knights.

Amber Daniels had six kills, April White five and Kelsie Shoffeitt and Veronica Wilder four apiece for Lower Lake. Shoffeitt also had four blocks and White added two. Daniels led the team with six aces.

Lower Lake rallied from a 7-0 deficit in game one.

Jennifer Green led Kelseyville (0-2) with nine kills, Kyra Rudnick had five digs and Ariel Facey added three kills and two aces.

Clear Lake def. St. Vincent

At Petaluma, the Clear Lake Cardinals lost the first two game before rallying for a 20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-10 NCL I South win over the St. Vincent Mustangs.

“We did the same thing when we played down there last year,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said. “We didn”t start playing until the third game.”

Vanessa Tullos and Morgan Psalmonds engineered the comeback. Tullos pounded out 21 kills and had 11 digs, while setter Psalmonds added 18 assists, 15 service points and four kills.

“Those two did great, they brought us back,” Psalmonds said.

Another Clear Lake standout was Haley Garzoli with 10 digs in the back row.

As the match progressed, Psalmonds said the Cardinals” strategy was pretty simple ? get the ball to Tullos.

“We kept setting it up for her,” Psalmonds said.

Boys” soccer

Lower Lake 9, Middletown 1

At Lower Lake, the host Lower Lake Trojans knocked off Middletown in NCL I North play.

Shawn Fromer provided the Mustangs with their lone goal courtesy of a penalty kick.

“We had another penalty kick, but we kicked it right at the keeper,” Middletown coach Chuck Rannells said.

“We had some breakaways but it didn”t happen,” Rannells added. “We still have a lot to work on. It seems like we make one mental mistake and it”s like three goals (scored against us).”

We”re also breaking in a new goalie.”

Lower Lake did not report its scoring.
