UPPER LAKE — Ward Beecher”s 67-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage set the tone as the undefeated Upper Lake High School junior varsity football team rolled past the Kelseyville Knights, 50-6, in a North Central League I interlock game on homecoming Saturday at Upper Lake.

Beecher, the star running back for the Cougars, played only one half and still amassed 131 yards on eight carries, including the touchdown and a two-point conversion. He is just 85 yards shy of reaching 1,000.

Four other Upper Lake ballcarriers also topped the century mark:

? Joey Valdez rushing for 161 yards on four carries with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. He also caught a 50-yard TD pass.

? Alex Castillo had his best day of the season to date with 122 yards on six carries with a two-point conversion.

? Jerimiah Swaney had 122 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. He replaced Beecher in the second half.

? Wesley Thaxton rushed for 109 yards on two carries, including a 95-yard scoring run.

Also for the Cougars, who piled up an amazing 779 yards of offense, quarterback Travis Coleman rushed for 50 yards, two touchdowns and a conversion.
