UPPER LAKE — Evan LaBruzzo of Rincon Valley Christian challenged Upper Lake High School”s course record in the varsity boys” division during a four-team Coastal Mountain Conference cross country meet Wednesday at Upper Lake.
Two weeks after Cloverdale”s Joe Carrillo completed the 2.86-mile Upper Lake course in 15 minutes, 39 seconds, LaBruzzo finished in 15:51 to top Wednesday”s field, which included runners from Fort Bragg, St. Helena and host Upper Lake.
“If he would have had someone with him to challenge him, he might have run faster,” Upper Lake coach John Woods said of LaBruzzo, who was well out in front of the pack.
Charlie Coburn of Upper Lake was the only runner remotely close to LaBruzzo. He finished second in 16:21.
Also for Upper Lake, Chris Cisneros was third in 17:06 and Nick Davison was fifth in 17:35.
“Cisneros PRd by 20 seconds and Davison was about the same,” Woods said. “I”m really proud of both of those guys.”
Upper Lake beat Fort Bragg 17-42 in team scoring.
Girls
Alex Sciocchetti of Fort Bragg and Ali Van Zandt of Rincon Valley Christian battled it out in the girls” race, Sciocchetti finally pulling ahead and winning in 19:49 to Van Zandt”s 20:06. Upper Lake”s Tonya Bennett was third in 22:30.
Brittany Brenner of Upper Lake finished seventh in 24:28 as the Cougars beat an incomplete Fort Bragg team.
JV boys
Upper Lake had the only complete team in the junior varsity boys” division and nine of the first 10 runners to cross the finish line were Cougars, led by Jarad Wade in 18:36.
Also finishing in the top five were Upper Lake”s Brandon Lovrin (19:24), Giovanni Baut-ista (19:29), Daniel Van Meter (19:35) and Michael Herringshaw (22:29).
The Cougars travel to the Monterey Invita-tional on Saturday.
