Statistical leaders

Rushing — Clear Lake quarterback Steven Edwards rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns in a 46-13 win over Cloverdale. Upper Lake”s Jason Harlan carried the ball 22 times for 104 yards in a 27-6 loss to St. Vincent. Kelseyville”s Geno Poloni gained 103 yards on only six carries with one TD in a 40-16 victory over Willits. Lower Lake”s Roy Percoats (10×101) and Davante Scott (22×100) reached the century mark in a wild 49-42 loss to Lower Lake. Middletown”s David Pike had 89 yards and three more TDs in a 40-7 win over St. Helena.

Passing — Middletown”s Kyle Brown completed 10 of 20 passes for 190 yards and a TD against St. Helena. Lower Lake”s Davante Scott connected on 7 of 11 passes for 143 yards and a TD against Fort Bragg. Kelseyville”s Chris Aguon completed only two passes (on three attempts) for 93 yards. Both of his completions were touchdowns.

Receiving — Alphonzo Daniels of Lower Lake caught four passes for 133 yards and a TD. Kelseyville”s Mike Davis had two catches for 93 yards and two TDs while Clear Lake”s Tyler Beets had four receptions for 49 yards. Middletown”s David Pike had only one catch, but it went for 50 yards.

Highlights

Special teams — Middletown kicker Danny Cardenas had a string of 25 consecutive PATs end when he missed his first extra-point try of the season in the first quarter against St. Helena. He also had a PAT blocked in the fourth quarter. Kelseyville”s Mike Davis turned a Willits onside kick into a 54-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Clear Lake”s Tanner Mansell blocked a Cloverdale punt.

Stat of the week, maybe the season — Willits ran 97 plays on offense to Kelseyville”s 20 in the Knights” 40-16 victory in the North Central League I North opener for both teams Friday night in Kelseyville. The Knights didn”t have the ball much but they certainly knew what to do with it when they did. All six of their touchdowns came on plays off 44 yards or longer — a 44-yard run, a 47-yard run, a 90-yard run (by Geno Poloni), 44- and 49-yard passes and a 54-yard kickoff return. No official county records are kept regarding number of plays run or allowed, but it”s a pretty good bet no one has done so much with so little.

Trifecta — Clear Lake”s Steven Edwards ran for two scores and returned an interception for another against Cloverdale. Teammate Tyler Beets had an interception return for a touchdown in the same game, in fact, in the same quarter (the fourth). Lower Lake”s Jack O”Hara rushed for three touchdowns against Fort Bragg.

Sweet 16 — That”s how many touchdowns (all rushing) Middletown”s David Pike has scored through the first six weeks of the season.

Good timing I — Middletown”s Jake Davis saw his first action of the season in the Mustangs” win over St. Helena. He played the entire game at middle linebacker and also carried the ball five times for 57 yards. Davis” return comes just in time for the Mustangs (5-1), who make their NCL I North opener Friday in Fort Bragg against the undefeated Timberwolves (6-0).

Good timing II — Despite losing their first five games of the season, the Clear Lake Cardinals and coach Schad Schweitzer woke up Saturday morning in first place in the NCL I South standings following their win against Cloverdale. If you”re going to win your first game of the season, your league opener is a good time to do it.

Sack attack ? and attack ? and attack ? Lower Lake”s Cody Torres had three sacks against Fort Bragg and teammates Jack O”Hara and Derek Hardin had two apiece.

Deuces are wild — Mike Davis had two of Kelseyville”s four interceptions against Willits, Clear Lake”s Jamie Lopez recovered two fumbles against Cloverdale, and Middletown”s Jereomy Hoefer and Clear Lake”s Shawn Larsen each had two sacks in their teams” respective victories.

Game ball — Kelseyville”s Mike Davis caught 49- and 44-yard touchdown passes against Willits, returned an onside kickoff 54 yards for another score, and picked off two passes.

Six-pack — Fort Bragg passed for six of its seven touchdowns against Lower Lake.

NFL Films says no thanks — They rejected the game film from the Raiders at 49ers game on Sunday. Kidding.

Game of the week — A year ago, the Middletown Mustangs brought a 5-1 record into play against a 6-0 Fort Bragg team and won 49-41 at Middletown. Middletown went on to win the NCL I North title and Fort Bragg went on to win the North Coast Section Division IV championship. That game took place on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. This coming Friday — Oct. 22, 2010 — it”s the exact same situation, only this time the venue is Fort Bragg. Middletown brings a 5-1 mark into its NCL I North opener against a Fort Bragg team that is 1-0 in league and 6-0 overall.

Game of the week II — Kelseyville (1-0, 5-1), a winner of five straight, hosts Lower Lake (0-1, 4-2) in another NCL I North game this Friday. The Trojans are led by former longtime Kelseyville coach Stan Weiper. Both teams are greatly improved from a year ago, so it has the makings of an exciting contest.

Low-five — Upper Lake has lost five in a row and 14 of its last 15.

That”s a big 10-4 — Kelseyville linebacker Nick Rodrigues had 10 solo tackles and four assists against Willits. He also rushed for 86 yards and touchdown.

Fair is fair — Since Clear Lake and Kelseyville now play in the Bass Bowl, perhaps the 49ers and Raiders should follow suit with their own game and fish trophy. Since bass is taken, how about another fish? Maybe the Crappie Bowl.
