Lower Lake quarterback Devante Scott gained 113 yards and scored a TD in a losing cause while teammate Jack O”Hara added 98 yards and a touchdown. Upper Lake”s one consistent bright spot this season, Jason Harlon, gained 122 yards in a loss to Willits.

Receiving — There were players who had more catches but none bigger than the 23-yard deflected pass that Clear Lake tight end Tyler Beets pulled in for the game-winning touchdown against St. Vincent. Kelseyville”s Mike Davis had three catches for 90 yards and two more touchdowns against Lower Lake. Middletown fullback Jake Davis caught his first pass of the season — an 83-yard screen play — to set up a Mustangs score against Fort Bragg.

Highlights

Special teams — Lower Lake”s Alphonzo Daniels returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown against Kelseyville. Middletown placekicker Danny Cardenas put the Mustangs on the scoreboard firstwith a 22-yard field goal against Fort Bragg. He also made all five of his extra points.

D as is dynamite defense — Kelseyville”s Garrett Hugginson recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown against Lower Lake. Middletown”s Andres Fernandez returned an interception 32 yards for a score against Fort Bragg. He also set up another touchdown with a fumble recovery.

Season of the sack — Middletown”s Jereomy Hoefer notched his county-leading eighth and ninth sacks of the season while teammate Luke Parker registered Nos. 6 and 7 against Fort Bragg.

Deuces are wild — Middletown”s Marcus Gabaldon recovered two fumbles in the win over Fort Bragg.

Streaks — Middletown and Kelseyville have won six in a row and Upper Lake has lost six straight.

From big game to bigger game — Middletown (6-1) handed Fort Bragg (6-1) its first loss of the season last weekend, snapping the Timberwolves” six-game winning streak this season and 12-game winning streak dating back to last season, when they won the North Coast Section Division IV championship. Now the Mustangs return home Friday to play another red-hot team, the Kelseyville Knights.

Something-has-to-give department — Middletown hosts Kelseyville on Friday, so barring a tie one of those six-game winning streaks is going bye-bye.

Sure will miss them — Tom Bosley and Barbara Billingsley. If you don”t know who they are, ask your folks. Billingsley”s jive interpreter scene in the movie Airplane is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

9-for-9 — Clear Lake junior varsity kicker Omar Vazquez made all nine of his PATs against St. Vincent.

All those experts were right ? The Phillies were the better team (chuckle).

High-five — Kelseyville quarterback Chris Aguon ran for three scores and passed for two more against Lower Lake.

Motoring — Michael Meiswinkel had a 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in St. Vincent”s loss to Clear Lake.

Pretty fair JV battle brewing — The Upper Lake Cougars (7-0) host the Clear Lake Cardinals (5-2) on Saturday. Upper Lake running Ward Beecher has 1,217 rushing yards on the season.

Can”t wait to see it — AMC”s new series, The Walking Dead, which airs Halloween night. Hey, I”m into the zombie stuff.

Short memories — As far as the Clear Lake Cardinals are concerned, they”re the winners of two straight, not the losers of their first five. They can improve to 3-0 in the NCL I South standings with a victory Saturday in Upper Lake.

Fall sports freshman of the year — Middletown soccer star Hannah Diaz.

Dead men walking — Mike Singletary, Wade Phillips.
