LAKEPORT — Forwards Kristy Hayes, Telia Paskaly, Amely Ballesteros and Briana Dutcher scored a goal apiece on Tuesday as the Clear Lake Cardinals closed out their North Central League I South girls” soccer schedule with a 4-0 whitewashing of the St. Helena Saints at Lakeport.

Clear Lake, a 3-1 loser to St. Helena in their first South encounter, closes out league play at 4-4. The Cardinals can also square their overall record, which currently stands at 10-11-2, with a NCL I interlock win Thursday in Lower Lake.

“We knew this would make a big difference in the seeding (for the playoffs),” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said of a win over St. Helena. “We came out and played a great game.”

Clear Lake honored its seniors before the start of play, including Dutcher, who scored on a penalty kick in the first half to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

“All of our seniors played pretty well but three of our sophomores did a great job,” Larrea said of Hayes, Nadine Bradley and Emily Norwood.

“Nadine controlled the ball on defense and Norwood was outstanding on defense back there with her,” Larrea said.

Hayes, who has bounced back and forth between the junior varsity and varsity squads this season, capped off the scoring with a goal in the second half, Savannah DeKeyer picking up the assist.

Chelo Lundquist-Krag”s play in the midfield also helped choke off St. Helena”s offense.

“She”s just so active in the middle,” Larrea said.

Clear Lake grabbed a 2-0 lead before the half on a goal by Ballesteros with an assist from Alyssa O”Donnell.
