LAKEPORT — The Lake County Board of Supervisors (BOS) have honored the Redbud Audubon Society (RAS) with the Lake County 2010 Conservation of the Year Award for its work in protecting birds and wildlife in Lake County.
Redbud Audubon Society president Marilyn Waits accepted the award on behalf of the group”s 200 members during the board of supervisors weekly meeting on Tuesday.
The Lake County Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee nominated the group for the award.
The Redbud Audubon Society was founded in 1974 and some of its major accomplishments are, the annual Heron Festival, this year more than 2,000 people attended with nearly one-half of them coming from outside of the county. It has built and maintained trails in the Anderson Marsh State Historic Park donated Audubon Adventures publications to Lake County schools. RAS participated in a working partnership with the Children”s Museum of Art and Science for annual day camps for low-income Lake County schoolchildren. RAS provided nature education to county residents for 36 years through monthly guest speakers, field trips and special events. The Redbud Audubon Society was awarded the first Stars of Lake County Environmental Award in 2006.
The society was founded by a group of conservation-minded Lake County citizens. They are a nonprofit California corporation and operate under the umbrella of the National Audubon Society, one of the biggest and most successful conservation organizations in the nation.
