After retiring from corporate management in Silicon Valley, we moved to Lake County in 1974. We invested in the fast food business in Lakeport and Lucerne. I have witnessed the ups and downs of our county”s economy. What upset me the most was the death of Konocti Harbor, with 600 lost jobs. A major blow to our economy, being the largest employer. Our economy has remained stagnant.
For 36 years we have lived in our shoreline home. This summer was the worst year ever for floating weeds. Floating for over four months, killing the tourist business. Our county needs all the help it can get to survive.
What enlightened me was the Board of Supervisors” decision to purchase the Lucerne Castle. A major step in the right direction. I have sentimental value for that building. My uncle had a band that performed in that castle in the ”50s that was enjoyed by tourists as well as county residents. How anyone can condemn that decision because of the building”s age of 82 years blows my mind. Humans today think they are so smart, with building codes and all the fancy construction equipment.
A recent tour of Rome opened my eyes. Ten thousand tourists a day tour the Vatican, walking through many structures that are centuries old. Built by people with just brains and bare hands. To suggest that a building that is only 82 years old should be torn down is insane. That castle can have many uses.
It is already creating jobs with roofers working on the building. A positive that is desperately needed for our county”s future. In my opinion, the castle is the most beautiful building in our county.
