WILLITS — The table has been run and the Middletown Mustangs are the North Central League I North champions in girls” soccer for the third consecutive season.

Behind two goals from freshman Hannah Diaz, Middletown knocked off the Willits Wolverines 5-0 on Thursday in Willits to complete an 8-0 league campaign. The Mustangs, now 16-1-1 overall, should draw a high seed on Sunday when the North Coast Section Division II field is announced.

Counting last season, Middletown is 33-3-1 in its last 37 games and all three losses have come to the same team — St. Vincent, this year”s NCL I South champion.

“I”m not sure the freshmen know what it means but the older girls were sliding in the mud after the game,” Middletown co-coach Louise Owens said of the celebration that ensured after the Mustangs nailed down a third straight North championship.

“That”s exciting every time,” Owens said of winning league. “It wasn”t the most exciting league race we”ve had, but that”s partly attributable to how well the girls have played.”

Kylie Agapoff, Taylor Sloan and Alicia Solomon also scored for the Mustangs, who should be among the top seeds when the playoff field is announced on Sunday.

Brittany Cash, Kelly Wilkinson and Tanya Nance added assists.
