Editors note: Christiane Smith sent her letter to Melissa Fulton, CEO of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce, and this was her response on Oct. 28, , which she also forwarded to the Lakeport Speedway. Smith thanked Fulton for responding to her.
Dear Christiane,
Your e-mail was passed onto me by our receptionist and I appreciate your taking the time to share your concerns with us. I”m sorry that it created an unpleasant stay for you in Lakeport. Not sure if you”ve ever experienced going to the races, but many people love the races.
When the fairgrounds were built many years ago, they were outside the main part of Lakeport. As with many cities which grow over the years, the fairgrounds are now in the center of town and the noise issues exist. For many years now there has been discussion about the state selling the fairgrounds property and relocating it outside of the city. With the state budget concerns we don”t see that happening any time soon.
The races are a large attraction for many in our community and many visitors over the summer months that come from other areas. The officials for Lakeport Speedway adhere to strict noise controls and they are constrained to complete all races no later than 11 p.m. by the City of Lakeport. I should also mention that they do not race every weekend but most weekends from mid-April through the end of August. They actually complete their ?regular” racing schedule prior to Labor Day and then hold races one weekend in mid-September and again mid-October. These are two-day events.
I don”t disagree that the noise level is high in Lakeport during those hours the racing takes place. There is a balance in communities everywhere when it comes to family entertainment that infringes upon certain aspects of the rest of the community. I hear long-time residents who complain about the noise of the ski boat races offshore of Lakeport when they take place. Others find them entertaining and exciting. These types of activities bring much-needed revenue to the community in the form of restaurants, gas stations, motels, etc.
We”re very glad you found another location to continue your weekend in Lake County. Please check our Web site at www.lakecochamber.com when you plan your next visit. There are wonderful events throughout the year that I”m sure you will find entertaining and fun. Please feel free to call me at any time for information about our area, 263-5092.
