LUCERNE — A 19-year-old man was stranded on Castle Rock in Lucerne Wednesday evening, requiring a helicopter rescue, according to the Northshore Fire Protection District.

The man climbed Castle Rock to watch the sunset but decided he would be unable to climb down in the darkness, said Steve Hart, battalion chief for Northshore Fire. Castle Rock ranges from 60 to 80 feet tall with a sheer south face and a moss-covered north face, Hart said. He said rescue officials attempted to climb the face but determined a helicopter rescue would be safest for all parties.

The Sonoma County Sheriff”s Department”s Henry 1 rescue helicopter, equipped with night vision, was flown to Castle Rock and used a harness system to rescue the climber, Hart said.

The incident was resolved around 7:15 p.m., according to Hart.
