CALISTOGA — Katherine Edmonds” double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds powered the Upper Lake Cougars to a 48-21 victory over Calistoga in a non-league varsity girls” basketball game Tuesday night in Calistoga.

It was the season opener for the Cougars (1-0) and head coach Mike Smith, who gave a favorable review to his team”s initial effort for the 2010-11 campaign.

“I”m installing a whole new offensive system and they”re buying into it,” Smith said.

Shayla Wyman added eight points and point guard Sierra Coleman added six points and four assists.

“She did a good job distributing the ball,” Smith said of Coleman.

Kelly Strong led the Cougars with five rebounds.

“We”re a pretty young group,” Smith said of his underclassmen-dominated roster. “Only one of our seniors has played in the program before.”

Upper Lake returns to action Thursday against Roseland Prep in the opening round of the round-robin Upper Lake Tournament for junior varsity and varsity teams. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. South Fork and Round Valley are the other two varsity teams entered.

In JV girls” action Tuesday, Upper Lake beat Calistoga 35-11 behind 13 points from Emily Wold, seven from Ashley Lovrin and six from Monika Diaz.

Kelseyville 57, Esparto 24

At Esparto, Mike Allen scored 16 points, Max Huff added 14 and Mike Davis had 12 as Kelseyville overpowered Esparto in the Knights” season opener.

Kelseyville (1-0) led 18-4 after one quarter and never looked back.

“Our defensive energy was real good and the kids rebounded well,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said. “And we still haven”t had a practice yet with the full squad. All in all it was a good tune-up for our tournament coming up.”

Kelseyville hosts the 39th annual Stokes Invitational beginning on Thursday and running through Saturday at the Kelseyville gym. The Knights play Marshall on Thursday at 7:30, Round Valley on Friday at 10:30 a.m., and Justin-Siena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Huff had a double-double for the Knights as he led the team with 10 rebounds. Mark MacDonald had nine boards and Dustin Thaxton added four points and a team-high five steals.

Kelseyville also won the junior varsity game.
