KELSEYVILLE — If you were looking for down-to-the-buzzer excitement on Thursday during first-round action in the 39th annual Stokes Invitational basketball tournament at Kelseyville High School, the pickings were pretty slim.

Most of the games were downright ugly although the Ferndale girls did win a 64-61 overtime thriller against Fort Bragg. Kelseyville”s boys also put a battle before falling 67-63 to Thugood Marshall High School of San Francisco. Lake County”s other teams had a long day on the hardwood. Kelseyville”s girls fell 81-21 to Cloverdale, Clear Lake”s boys dropped a 70-26 decision to Justin-Siena of Napa, and the Middletown girls fell 57-17 to Arcata in their season debut.

In other action Thursday, Capuchino High School of San Bruno took it to Round Valley of Covelo, 84-28 in boys” action, while Piedmont turned back St. Helena 45-33 in the girls” bracket.

Boys

Marshall 67, Kelseyville 63

Marshall had only five players in uniform because of a team disciplinary action and was minus two starters, but that didn”t stop the San Francisco team from beating tournament host Kelseyville in first-round action.

“They had no bench and one of their players (Theo Hill) picked up his third foul midway through the second quarter,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said. “He did a great job playing with three fouls.”

Hill finished with 17 points while teammate Travalle Johnson led the team with 24, including three 3-pointers. John Sears added 14 points.

Marshall outscored Kelseyville 18-13 in the third quarter to open up a 51-45 lead entering the final period.

Max Huff”s 16 points paced the Knights, Mike Davis scored 12 of his 14 in the fourth quarter, and Mike Allen finished with 12 points.

“We passed the ball very well although our shot selection could have been better at times,” Conrad said. “We played pretty unselfish basketball.”

Huff and Mark MacDonald finished with 10 rebounds apiece to lead Kelseyville.

“MacDonald did a fantastic job on the boards,” Conrad said.

Justin-Siena 70, Clear Lake 26

Justin-Siena of Napa had this one well in hand after one quarter with a 27-8 lead and the Braves continued to add to their lead the rest of the way. Domenic Hjerpe led the way with 16 points and Matt Goetz finished with 14. All 10 players on Justin”s roster scored at least two.
