UPPER LAKE — Dustin Thaxton scored a season-best 20 points, including four 3-pointers, as Kelseyville beat College Prep 61-35 in first-round varsity boys” action Thursday at the Upper Lake Winter Classic basketball tournament.
Tournament host Upper Lake fell 64-53 to Anderson Valley in the other varsity game. In junior varsity action, Kelseyville beat College Prep 46-41 and Upper Lake defeated Anderson Valley (score not reported).

Kelseyville 61, College Prep 35
Shuffling their lineup because of personnel moves in the last few days, the Knights built a 19-6 first-quarter lead against College Prep.
“College Prep is good, but they”re young,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said. “We came out with some pretty good energy. We did the things we needed to do.”
Mike Davis and Wyatt Ferrell added 13 points apiece and Mark MacDonald had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Knights (3-2). Davis also had four assists.
Kelseyville plays Anderson Valley tonight at 8 p.m. in the round-robin tournament.
Anderson Valley 64, Upper Lake 53
A 23-9 second quarter by Anderson Valley accounted for the winning margin and then some.
“We”ve struggled in the second quarter for some reason,” Upper Lake coach Chris Cisneros said. “We”ve started strong, but we”re just having a second-quarter breakdown.”
Upper Lake trailed 17-12 after one period.
Tyler Warren”s 17 points and another 14 from Billy Armstrong paced the Cougars (1-3). Freshman point guard Wesley Thaxton added 10 points and sophomore Jared Wade had six.
“Right now I”m starting three seniors, a sophomore and a freshman,” Cisneros said. “We”re still competitive and we”re making some major improvement.”
Mike Blackburn scored 21 points and Garrett Mezzanatto had 20 for Anderson Valley.
Upper Lake plays College Prep today at 5 p.m.

Kelseyville 46, College Prep 41
John Mark Reagan”s 16 points paced the Kelseyville JVs to a win over College Prep in first-round action. Arnulfo Vargas added nine points as the Knights improved to 2-0 on the season.
“We hit some key free throws there at the end,” Kelseyville coach Rich Martin said of two free throws apiece by Reagan and Corey Huber, who finished with seven points.
Kelseyville”s JVs play Anderson Valley at 6:30 p.m.
