LAKEPORT — Mike Davis and Steven Edwards don”t play for the same team, but they most assuredly shared one thing in common on Monday night at the 17th annual Record-Bee Hoop Classic in Lakeport.
They couldn”t miss.
Davis scored 32 points, 17 of them in the first quarter, for the Kelseyville Knights in a 76-48 victory over Lower Lake. A few hours earlier Edwards scored 21 of his team-leading 26 points in the first half for the Clear Lake Cardinals in a 77-61 victory over the Upper Lake Cougars in first-round varsity action.
Kelseyville 76, Lower Lake 48
Powered by Davis” 17 points, Kelseyville lit up the scoreboard for 31 points in the first quarter to open up a 31-17 lead.
“He was on fire,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said of the senior Davis, whose first quarter included two 3-pointers, four two-point baskets and three free throws … and only one missed shot from the field.
“He was scoring every way you possibly can ? 3-pointers, taking it to the rim, pull-up jumpers. It was a pretty impressive scoring display.”
Davis also had five steals and five assists as Kelseyville improved to 6-2 on the season.
Max Huff added a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds while Wyatt Ferrell had eight points and seven rebounds.
“He had a great game tonight,” Conrad said of Ferrell.
Kelseyville”s defense helped kick-start its offense, according to Conrad.
“A lot of our scoring came from our defense,” Conrad said.
Nick Steward”s eight points led Lower Lake and Joe Taylor added seven.
In the early varsity game Monday:
Clear Lake 77, Upper Lake 61
You kind of had the feeling it was going to be Edwards” and Clear Lake”s night early on as the Cardinals scored the game”s first 16 points. Edwards went 5-for-6 from the field in the first quarter and 9-for-11 in the first half ? all two-point baskets.
Upper Lake did manage to make a game of it and cut Clear Lake”s lead to five points in the final seconds of the first half. Jared Wade hit three straight baskets for the Cougars, including one of his four 3-pointers on the night, to make it 38-33. But with time running out in the second quarter, an Upper Lake player made the mistake of fouling Edwards while he was attempting a long 3-point shot with 1.8 seconds to go. Edwards missed but made all three free throws for a 41-33 Clear Lake halftime lead.
The Cardinals increased their cushion to 14 in the third quarter as Tanner Mansell scored eight of his 16 points in the period.
Also finishing in double digits for Clear Lake (3-5) were Marc Rivas with 12 points and Kyle Donald with 10.
Tyler Warren fueled Upper Lake”s offense with a team-leading 21 points, Wade finished with 19 and Mike Sutton had 11 in the tournament debut of first-year Upper Lake coach Chris Cisneros.
Upper Lake is 1-6.
