LAKE COUNTY — A nine-month investigation into the murders of two Maine residents resulted in the filing of charges on two men currently in the custody of the Lake County Sheriff on other cases, Capt. James Bauman stated in a press release issued Wednesday.
Murder charges were filed Wednesday by the Lake County District Attorney”s Office with special allegations on Robby Alan Beasley, 30 and Elijah Bae McKay, 28, both of originally from Maine.
According to Bauman, the partially decomposed bodies of Frank Maddox, 32 and his wife Yvette Maddox, 40, were discovered in early March when a pair of men traveling through the area found them at the bottom of an embankment off of Morgan Valley Road in Lower Lake. He said a subsequent autopsy revealed the two both sustained gunshot wounds among other injuries.
“Within days of the discovery of their bodies, detectives with the
Sheriff”s Major Crime Unit learned that Beasley had apparently hired the couple to come to Lake County several months prior to help him with a marijuana operation,” Bauman said. “Both of the victims had been reported as missing about a month before the discovery of their bodies” Bauman said while Beasley was still considered only as a person of interest in the Maddox case at the time, he was located in near his home in Clearlake only two days after the bodies were found and arrested on an unrelated arrest warrant out of the State of Maine.
Subsequent search warrants for two homes he frequented resulted in additional local charges of marijuana cultivation, Bauman said. Beasley has remained in custody at Lake County Jail since March.
“About one week into the investigation, McKay was also identified as a person of interest in the case and when a search warrant was served at his home in Lower Lake, he was arrested on marijuana cultivation, possession for sales, and weapons charges,” Bauman said. “He posted a $10,000 bail and was released the same day he was arrested. With his marijuana case still pending in Lake County, detectives learned in October that he had apparently fled California and was believed to be in Atlanta, Georgia. His local bondsman surrendered his bond from March, retrieved him from Georgia, and brought him back to Lake County where he has remained in custody at the county jail since Oct. 19.”
Bauman said that detectives worked the double homicide case since March and now that the investigation has reached the point of supporting an allegation of murder, both Beasley and McKay now face those charges in addition to their other criminal cases. Beasley was arraigned on the murder charges on Wednesday morning and McKay is scheduled to be arraigned today.
No further information is being released on the murder case and Bauman said additional arrests are anticipated.
