MIDDLETOWN — One team didn”t show up and only five matches were contested between Clear Lake and the Middletown Mustangs on Wednesday during Coastal Mountain Conference wrestling action at Middletown High School.
Clear Lake beat Middletown 42-30 and both Lake County teams received forfeit victories against a Point Arena team that made it as far as Blue Lakes before the school van broke down.
The Clear Lake-Middletown match featured nine forfeited weight classes. In those weight classes that were contested, Middletown won three and Clear Lake the other two.
Middletown victories went to Anthony Castaldo, a 7-5 winner over Matt Engle at 142 pounds; Dorian Decker, a 7-2 winner over Mike DeAngelo at 154 pounds; and Joseph Foster, a winner by second-round pin over Josh Larsen at 173 pounds.
Clear Lake victories went to Nathan Powers, a winner by third-round pin over Nick Allen at 147 pounds; and James McGann, a winner by second-round pin over Ryan Fontenot at 162 pounds.
“I have a huge logjam of wrestlers between 145 and 162 pounds,” Middletown coach Troy Brierly said.
Because of the nine forfeited weight classes, the two teams held a number of exhibition matches to give other wrestlers some needed mat time, according to Brierly.
Middletown”s squad returns to action next Wednesday in Kelseyville against both the host Knights and Willits.
On Saturday, the four female members of the Middletown squad will compete in a tournament at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento. They are freshman Sierra Egger at 98 pounds, sophomore Mary Mann at 103 pounds, sophomore Karen Castellano at 108 pounds, and junior Rachel Ramirez at 146 pounds.
“Sierra and Mary have been wrestling for a few years in the USA program,” Brierly said.
