KELSEYVILLE — The Middletown Mustangs had their offense and defense going while turning back the Kelseyville Knights 60-46 in a North Central League I North varsity boys” basketball game on Tuesday night in Kelseyville.
Avenging a 59-47 loss to Kelseyville last month in the Record-Bee Hoop Classic, the Mustangs were on top of their game this time around. Bo Sheffer and Jake Anderson scored 14 points apiece — a season high for Anderson — and John-Wesley Davis added 11 more as Middletown snapped a two-game losing streak while improving to 1-1 in the North standings and 11-7 overall.
A victory that also featured a season-high seven 3-pointers by the Mustangs, including three by Luke Humphrey and two by Sheffer, helped Middletown rinse out the foul taste left by a 71-68 double-overtime loss at Fort Bragg on Friday.
“I think they out-executed us,” Kelseyville assistant coach Rich Facey said. “Their defense is pretty tough and they never allowed us to get into any kind of rhythm with our offense, which was non-existent,” Facey said.
Only four Kelseyville players reached the scoring column against Middletown and two of them accounted for nearly all the team”s points. Dustin Thaxton led the way with 20, including six 3-pointers, and Mike Davis added 19.
“Middletown dominated the boards,” Facey said. “If my stat sheet is right it says we had three offensive rebounds all night. They played us tough.”
Kelseyville trailed 27-17 at the half but closed the gap to six early in the third quarter. Middletown took control from there as Sheffer scored on three straight possessions, according to Facey.
“Anderson also hit a couple of shots for them,” Facey said. “Seven of his points came in the third quarter. That helped them a lot.”
Kelseyville is now 1-2 in league and 11-7 overall.
“The effort was there, but not the execution,” Facey said.
Middletown plays its third straight league road game Friday in Lower Lake, while Kelseyville travels to Sonoma Academy for a non-league contest.
