VALLEJO — Six Kelseyville High School wrestlers made the trip and five won medals at the Mountain Clash tournament held Saturday in Vallejo.
“Guys seem to be peaking at just the right time,” Kelseyville High School coach Rob Brown said of his team”s performance at the competition, which featured 32-man brackets in the 14 different weight divisions.
Medals were awarded to the top eight finishers in each weight class.
Jacob Martinek had one of two third-place finishes for the Knights at 107 pounds. He went 4-1 overall with three pins and a technical fall, and one of his victories came against an opponent from Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa.
“The same guy beat him pretty good last year,” Brown said.
Jordan Brown had the other third-place medal, going 4-1 at 217 pounds.
Fourth-place medals went to Jeffry Ponce, who was 3-2 at 114 pounds, and Andrew Copsey, who was 3-2 at 173 pounds.
Wences Rojas added a fifth-place medal at 121 pounds.
Just missing out on a medal was Adryan Segura at 137 pounds. Unseeded in his weight class, Segura had the misfortune of running into the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds early on in the tournament and he lost to both.
“He wrestled really well, too,” Brown said.
While a half-dozen Knights made the trip to Vallejo, some of the team”s first-year wrestlers participated in a junior varsity tournament at Willits.
Reed Rasmussen won his first high school medal with a second at 137 pounds, Aaron Copsey came in third at 147 pounds, and Alfonso Reyes was fourth at 132 pounds.
Kelseyville returns to action Wednesday in Lakeport against Lower Lake and Clear Lake in a three-team Coastal Mountain Conference dual beginning at 5 p.m.
