KELSEYVILLE — The Kelseyville Knights turned back a strong effort by Lower Lake to beat the Trojans 63-53 in a North Central League I North varsity boys” basketball game on Tuesday night in Kelseyville.

“They threw the book at us and really played a good game,” Kelseyville assistant coach Rich Facey said of the Trojans, who fell to 1-5 in league and 5-18 overall.

Kelseyville”s win combined with Middletown”s 61-51 victory over Fort Bragg on Tuesday in Middletown moves the Knights into a first-place tie with the Timberwolves, both at 4-2. Middletown, now 3-2, hosts Kelseyville on Friday night.

Max Huff”s 24 points, two coming on a dunk in the third quarter, propelled the Knights. He also pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds and blocked three shots. Dustin Thaxton added 17 points, including four 3-pointers.

“Defensive pressure on the ball really turned the game in our favor,” Facey said.

Nick Steward and Alphonsos Daniels scored 12 points apiece for the Trojans. Jeff Davis added 10.

St. Vincent 67, Clear Lake 48

At Lakeport, Michael Meiswinkel scored 22 points in the first half and 39 overall as the St. Vincent Mustangs beat the Clear Lake Cardinals in NCL I South play.

“It was the Meiskwinkel show tonight,” Clear Lake coach Glenn Wienke said. “That”s what we get for keying on him.”

Meisweinkel had two 3-pointers among his total, both in the third quarter and both from well behind the arc.

“They were NBA 3s,” Wienke said. “He”s a quality player.”

St. Vincent (5-1) outscored Clear Lake 32-21 in the second half.

Tanner Mansell”s 19 points paced the Cardinals (1-5, 7-15). Kyle Donald added 18.

Girls” basketball

Willits 70, Upper Lake 32

At Upper Lake, the visiting Wolverines took all the suspense out of this one with a 32-point first quarter while beating the Upper Lake Cougars in NCL I interlock action.

“They pounded the ball inside,” Upper Lake coach Mike Smith said. “They got a lot of easy looks and baskets.”

Katherine Edmonds led the Cougars (4-17) with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Middletown 55, Fort Bragg 43

At Fort Bragg, junior guard Amber Hart scored a season-high 20 points as the Middletown Mustangs rolled past the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in NCL I North play.

Middletown improved to 3-2 in the North standings and 7-15 overall.

“I think that could be the best game of her career,” Middletown coach Marnin Pyzer said. “It”s definitely the best game for us at the varsity level.”

Hart scored from everywhere on the court, according to Pyzer.

“She scored on drives inside and from the perimeter,” Pyzer said. “She has the ability to do that. It was a nice thing to see.”

Rachel Sutton added eight points.

“When we score 55, I”m happy,” Pyzer said.
