LAKEPORT — The Lakeport Fire District (LFD) finished second in the fifth annual Bucket Brigade Blood Drive Challenge earlier this month, ending up six donations behind first-place Windsor Fire Protection District.
“I”m really, really proud of the community for making it a success,” Roy Disney, Lakeport Volunteer Firefighters Association president, said of the event.
LFD earned credit for 210 donations collected during the contest, which ran from late January until Feb. 10. It was “pretty impressive for our small town to donate that much,” Disney said.
LFD hosted three blood drives at which citizens could donate on behalf of LFD”s overall tally. The primary event was an afternoon drive at the LFD main station on Jan. 29. More than 150 residents turned out to donate blood and receive free T-shirts and barbecue lunches.
Events were also held in the Kmart parking lot in Lakeport on Feb. 4 and the American Legion Hall in Kelseyville the following day.
Geyserville Fire Protection District finished a distant third at 163, Sebastopol Fire Department was fourth with 96 and Ukiah Fire Department was the most improved department, finishing in fifth with 87, according to contest sponsor Blood Bank of the Redwoods (BBR). The BBR reported that nearly 270 new donors participated in this year”s contest.
