LAKEPORT — The Westshore Youth Basketball program (WYBL) needs new and returning parent volunteers if it is going to return next season.

The WYBL, under the leadership of Scott and Melody De Leon and a board of 12 dedicated parents, has successfully coordinated more than 400 basketball games for Westshore kids since taking over the previous “Pee Wee” basketball program in 2008.

The WYBL is open to boys and girls in grades third through eighth. Games are played in Lakeport during the months of January and February, finishing with All-Star tournaments in March.

Sponsors and sign-up fees are the primary funding source. This is an organization designed to provide the youth of Lake County the opportunity to develop the fundamental understanding and enjoyment of the game of basketball with an emphasis on learning basic skills, sportsmanship and team play.

“This has been one of the most rewarding tasks we”ve ever taken on, however, Scott and I and most of our board members are moving into the higher grades with our sports-playing kids and we cannot continue to coordinate the league. We can”t just let it end,” Melody De Leon said.

“We need to find new coordinators or another organization willing to take it over,” De Leon added. “The tremendous parent and community support along with the dedicated volunteer coaches, referees, and staff is what makes it all happen. Combine that with the growth you see in each child each game and the excitement of watching them play, and you find yourself not wanting to be anywhere else,” De Leon said.
