Whatever happened to people-based democracy?
I have always thought that the voice of the people was paramount in a democratic government. Apparently not. At this point, a portion of the state legislature is adamantly opposing a measure that would allow we Californians to vote on new/extended taxes to partially offset some of the spending cuts that will be detrimental to the state as a whole.
I can understand the reluctance concerning taxes. I cannot understand or accept the logic of denying the people the right to vote their preferences.
Last I heard, about two-thirds of the people thought the vote was a good thing even though many, at this time, had made a decision as to yes or no. In their eyes this is good government.
Regardless of the outcome, I think the vote is the proper way to go.
