LAKE COUNTY — Mayors for Meals was an opportunity for local elected officials to tour the Meals-On-Wheels programs operating out of the Lake County senior centers.

Jim Comstock of the Lake County Board of Supervisors toured the Middletown facility and helped deliver a route for Meals-On-Wheels. Clearlake Mayor Joyce Overton toured the Highlands Senior Center facilities and programs.

Lakeport Mayor Suzanne Lyons toured the Lakeport Senior Center, the Meals-On-Wheels Thrift Store at 560 Lakeport Blvd. and helped deliver a meal.

“As a community we are discussing compassion, but what I see with these programs is compassion in action” Lyons said after seeing the programs provided and the lives touched by the Lake County senior centers. Each year more than 100,000 meals are delivered to homebound seniors enabling them to remain independent and healthy. It takes a lot of volunteers with big hearts to give of their time to make the programs work.

Funding for these programs has been cut drastically. Senior centers are making every effort to make up for this shortfall and ensure that those in need continue to receive their meals and remain independent. March for Meals takes place Saturday at each of the five senior centers that have a Meals-On-Wheels program.
