This letter is in response to the letter from M. Hughes dated March 23 in the Record-Bee regarding the Kelseyville High School (KHS) Sober Graduation.
In October the KHS senior class president and Associated Student Body (ASB) president came to the Sober Grad parent committee and asked that instead of the typical sober grad if we, the parent group, would be willing to help the senior class go to Disneyland after graduation, basically a Sober Grad trip put on by the senior parents of the graduating class. In doing this, we are having the same fundraiser, which is Comedy Night held at the Lake County Fairgrounds on April 8 at 8 p.m. We are not doing anything different then each parent group has done year after year in having a Comedy Night, with professional comedians and having the age be 21 to attend.
Yes, alcohol will be served at this event, just as it has been in all the years past, no one younger than 21 will be indulging in the event.
Again, the money from this event is being raised to help send the graduating seniors on a trip after graduation if they choose to go.
In saying this, I think each of us needs to remember that there are many social functions that serve alcohol to people 21 or older and these events do donate to programs that serve people younger than the age of 21.
Just to name a few in our community, the Wine Alliance, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Quality Education Foundation, and I am sure there are more. I hope I have answered M. Hughes sufficiently and have squelched others concerns that the parents of the graduating class of 2011 Kelseyville High School are doing anything out of the normal parameters of raising funds to be used by people younger than 21.
