SAN LEANDRO — Wyatt Ferrell fired a round of 82 that included two birdies on Monday afternoon as the Kelseyville High School golf team returned to action after a two-week weather layoff by competing in the 18-team San Leandro Spring Classic at Tony Lema Golf Course.
“We haven”t hit a golf ball in two weeks,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “I was impressed with Wyatt and Corey”s scores,” Berry said of Ferrell and Corey Huber, who fired an 85 on the par-71 layout.
Constant rain and wet conditions have kept the Knights off their home course at Adams Springs on Cobb Mountain as well as off other courses throughout the Redwood Empire, which have been inundated with rain. Each of Kelseyville”s first two Coastal Mountain Conference South matches — at Mt. St. Helena in Calistoga and Meadowood in St. Helena — have been postponed because of wet conditions.
Such was not the case on a pleasantly warm and breezy day in San Leandro, where Deer Valley topped the field with a score of 378. Mission San Jose was next with 395, Irvington came in third with 402, Miramonte was fourth with 403, and Bishop O”Dowd rounded out the top five at 405.
Kelseyville, led by Ferrell and Huber, placed 13th with 490.
Also for the Knights, Ryan Schmidt had 103, Reed Rasmussen 107 and Liz Berry 113.
Low round of the day was a 3-under-par 68 by Alhambra High”s Elliot Busichio. Also finishing under par was Hayden Shieh of Mission San Jose with a 69.
Kelseyville, Middletown and other members of the CMC South are scheduled to make their conference debut Wednesday at Rooster Run in Petaluma. Rooster Run replaces Adobe Creek (now closed) as St. Vincent High School”s home course.
