UPPER LAKE — Victoria Alessandra scattered four hits and the Middletown Mustangs won their second softball game in as many days with an 8-3 non-league victory over the Upper Lake Cougars on Tuesday in Upper Lake.

Coming off a wild 18-16 eight-inning road win over Healdsburg on Monday, the Mustangs (2-3) led 3-1 after two innings against the Cougars (2-1). Upper Lake closed to 3-2 in the fourth, but Middletown came right back with four runs in the top of the fifth to give Alessandra all the support she would need.

“Middletown played a good game,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said.

A long break because of the weather — more than two weeks — didn”t help the Cougars” cause, according to Coburn.

“Not being able to play for 17 days hurt us,” Coburn said. “Everybody was rusty.”

Alessandra was certainly on top of her game, according to Middletown assistant coach Arryn Brand.

“Our pitcher was very confident and we”re proud of her,” Brand said of Alessandra”s five-strikeout, three-walk effort.

Middletown catcher Rachel Sutton called all the pitches for Alessandra, according to Brand, who is a former Middletown catcher.

“She did an amazing job, too,” Brand said.

Maria Castaldo, Madi Hicks, Mahkenzie Miller and Sutton had two hits apiece for the Mustangs. Losing pitcher Vanessa Han-son went 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI for the Cougars (2-1).

Middletown is just one win shy of matching its entire 2010 total.
