HIDDEN VALLEY — Jerry Espinoza beat Gabriela Reyes 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) in a three-hour marathon in second singles on Wednesday to lift the Middletown Mustangs to a 3-2 victory over the Clear Lake Cardinals in Coastal Mountain Conference tennis action at Hidden Valley Lake.
“The two of them kept hammering the ball back and forth,” Middletown coach Vic Wroobel said. “It was a great match.”
The Mustangs (1-1) also picked up wins in third singles as Maddie Kucer defeated Raul Rendon 6-3, 6-3, and in first doubles as Jeremy Turner and Nika Gibbs beat Darcy McCarrick and Clhoe Rojas 6-3, 6-0.
Clear Lake”s victories came in first singles, where Andreina Guedez defeated Cody Astley 6-2, 6-2, and in second doubles, where Kenny Henninger and Tamara Rojas beat Nolan Tkachenko and Austin Aragon 6-4, 6-3.
Both teams are 1-1.
Following a handful of rainouts, Middletown opened its season with a 5-0 loss on Tuesday in St. Helena.
The Mustangs return to action Friday in Kelseyville while Clear Lake hits the road to play Cloverdale.
Both matches begin at 4 p.m.
