CLOVERDALE — The Clear Lake Cardinals improved to 2-1 in Coastal Mountain Conference tennis play on Friday by beating the Cloverdale Eagles 4-1 at Cloverdale.
While the Cardinals breezed to wins in first singles — Andreina Guedez beat Sal Mendoza 6-0, 6-1 — and second doubles — Kenny Henninger and Tamara Rojas beat Alexis Hernandez and Hannah Pope 6-2, 6-4 — the other three matches were contested, according to Clear Lake coach Milo Meyer.
Gabriela Reyes beat Jesus Cardenas 6-3, 6-4 in a second singles match that was closer than the score indicated, according to Meyer.
“That was a good one, a very good match,” Meyer said.
Cloverdale”s lone win was a Jose Torres 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Raul Rendon in third singles.
In first doubles, Darcy McCarrick and Clhoe Rojas rallied for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over Brian Wells and Ben Natividad.
In exhibition doubles play, Clear Lake”s Brian Gatton and Faith Hornby were 6-2, 6-0 winners.
In other tennis action Friday:
Middletown 3, Kelseyville 2
At Middletown, three matches went the maximum three sets as the Middletown Mustangs beat the Kelseyville Knights in CMC tennis action.
The Knights (0-3) once again forfeited second doubles because they do not have enough players.
Of the contested matches, Moses Kuzu of Kelseyville beat Jerry Espinoza 6-0, 6-1 in first singles, the only match of the day that didn”t go three sets. Nils Mostin provided Kelseyville with its other win by beating Cody Astley 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in second singles.
In third singles, Middletown”s Maddie Kucer dropped the first set but battled back to beat Daniel Lucas 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3. The Mustangs also picked up a win in first doubles as Jeremy Turner and Nika Gibbs beat Max Lehman and Kyle Schmidt 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
Baseball
St. Vincent 11, Middletown 0
At Middletown, the St. Vincent Mustangs improved to 10-0 on the season with a home run barrage against Middletown, resulting in a six-inning victory because of the 10-run rule.
Going deep for St. Vincent were Matt Kirtley (three-run shot), Josh Mehta (two-run blast), K.C. Pedersen (two-run shot), Stewart Perry (solo) and Chris Braun (solo).
“They”re dialed,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said of St. Vincent”s hitters. “I was really impressed with the way they hit the ball. They hit some shots.”
Winning pitcher Jeff Matthews worked the first five innings for the victory, allowing all three Middletown hits, striking out four and walking one. Saul Preciado took the loss.
Bryan Holt doubled for Middletown (4-3) and Jon Tanguay and Andy Garcia added singles.
St. Helena 14, Lower Lake 0
At St. Helena, the St. Helena Saints blanked the Lower Lake Trojans in a five-inning game.
The Trojans (1-4) were limited to three hits, singles by Jason Winans, Kyle Buckingham and Shawn Bigelow.
Winans worked the first two innings on the mound and took the loss.
Softball
St. Vincent 4, Middletown 0
At Petaluma, Victoria Alessandra and Kaitlyn Swank combined on a one-hitter, but the Middletown Mustangs still lost to St. Vincent in non-league action.
St. Vincent scored a run in the bottom of the first and three more in the fifth.
“We just could not put our hits together,” Middletown coach Bob Cummesky said. “We matched up with them pretty well.”
A handful of close plays all went against Middletown, according to Cummesky.
“We couldn”t catch a break,” he said.
Madi Hicks went 2-for-3 with a double to lead Middletown at the plate. Erica Kirby, Kyleen Bouchard, Rachel Sutton and Hannah Williams had one hit apiece.
St. Helena 12, Lower Lake 3
At St. Helena, Lower Lake”s defense committed three errors during a six-run St. Helena first inning and the Trojans couldn”t recover, falling to the Saints in non-league action.
“Three errors in the first inning really cost us, really hurt us,” Lower Lake coach Tim Sherrell said.
Losing pitcher Amanda Graf had two of the Trojans” eight hits and also drove in one of their runs. Isabelle Azabill went 2-for-4 and Adrina Miller had a double.
The Trojans left the bases loaded in the second, fifth and seventh innings.
Graf went the distance, striking out one and walking three.
