Second Saturday Cinema screens ?Permaculture”
MIDDLETOWN ? Middletown Community Life”s Second Saturday Cinema features the premiere showing of “Permaculture: The Growing Edge” on Saturday. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the films will be shown at 3 p.m. at the Middletown Community United Methodist Church, located at 15843 Armstrong St. in Middletown. Refreshments will be served.
“Permaculture: The Growing Edge” introduces viewers to inspiring projects and a visit to David Holmgren”s homestead, tracking deer with naturalist Jon Young, sheet mulching an inner-city garden with a Hunters Point family, transforming an intersection into a gathering place with city repair and joining mycologist Paul Stamets as he cleans up an oil spill with mushrooms. Some of the key figures in the permaculture movement are interviewed: Penny Livingston-Stark, James Stark, Paul Stamets, Mark Lakeman, Elaine Ingham and Maddy Harland.
Permaculture is a sustainable system of earth care that offers solutions to many of the earth”s environmental problems and a proactive vision of change. The hour-long film will be followed by discussion, with the possibility of forming a group or groups to pursue some of the ideas into action.
Middletown Community Life”s Third Saturday Cinema will be an encore showing of “Avatar” on April 16. The film will be followed by a discussion that includes implications for health, science, spirituality and life.
Leber and Lewis perform Rumi set to music
MIDDLETOWN — Eric Leber and Clovice Lewis are presenting a series of special performances of poetry by the 13th-century poet known as Rumi, set to music by Lewis. The Leber-Lewis duet concert is called “Rumerice” and will be performed at 1 p.m. April 16 at the Middletown Community United Methodist Church, located at 11581 Armstrong St. in Middletown.
Rumi, the concert”s featured author, was born in 1207 and was a Persian spiritual teacher and Sufi mystic. He lived most of his life in Konya, present-day Turkey, and died in 1273 AD. His shrine remains a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people each month.
Rumi”s poetry continues to resonate and transcend religious, national and ethnic borders. His voluminous works are widely read in the original Persian and translated into many languages.
Leber is the reader in the concert and is known in Lake County as a teacher of T”ai Chi Ch”uan and a writer of poetry. Lewis is the principal chair cellist in the Ukiah Symphony Orchestra and an award winning composer, whose music is performed by many orchestras and professional ensembles around the nation.

?Inside Job” at Second Sunday Cinema
CLEARLAKE — Second Sunday Cinema”s free film for April is “Inside Job,” 6 p.m. Sunday at the Clearlake Community United Methodist Church at 14521 Pearl Ave. in Clearlake.
This just-released film won the 2011 Oscar for Best Documentary. It takes a look at the financial crash of 2008 and earned a 98-percent “Fresh” rating on RottenTomatoes” TomatoMeter.
After the film, Carol Cole-Lewis will share information the Lake County Time Bank, which is a project of a Transition Lake County working group.

Juried shows return to Main Street Gallery
LAKEPORT — The Main Street Gallery will once again present a series of themed juried art shows during the summer months of June, July, August and September.
Upcoming themes include “The Lake County Landscape” in June and abstract artwork in July. Entry information will be available beginning April 10 at the Main Street Gallery. Information about judges will be announced as it becomes available.
Concert to commemorate Earth Day
KELSEYVILLE — Songwriter and guitarist Jim Scott presents a musical celebration of Earth Day, 7 p.m. April 16 at the Kelseyville Senior Center, 5245 Third St.
Scott is known to many as co-composer of the celebrated Missa Gaia/Earth Mass with the Paul Winter Consort and singer of its anthem, “Common Ground.” Scott addresses issues of ecology, justice and peace in songs, poetry and short stories.
In recent years, Scott has turned more attention to composing choral music and has compiled and edited the “Earth and Spirit Songbook,” an anthology of 110 songs that feature many contemporary writers who share his passion for the earth.

Hip-hop collaboration at Soper-Reese
LAKEPORT ? April 16 marks a hip-hop collaboration including Big “D,” Spaz, Acetrain, Killabay, Guido the Boy, Doc Wizzle, Young Tubb, Dre B Mackin, Mr. Go Getter, Money Bag Mobb, Macinffuco, Mr. Miller and many more at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre, located at 275 S. Main St. in Lakeport.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show begins at 7 p.m. The artists lay out a hip-hop concert with an open dance floor. Parental consent is required.
Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 the day of the concert and $15 for the VIP package. The VIP tickets include the const of the concert, boasting the best seats in the house, and a DVD of the event as a souvenir.

Liebe and Eells to present watercolor class
LAKEPORT ? Diana Liebe will present a one-day workshop in watercolors, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 18 at the Lake County Arts Council”s Main Street Gallery, located at 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport.
The class will begin with warm up exercises and progress to executing a seascape and a landscape paintings. Participants are asked to bring their own watercolors and suitable paper.
Assisting with the class will be acrylics artist John Eells. These two artists promise an instructive and entertaining day of exploring the medium of watercolor.
The fee for the class is $25 and registration can be made by calling the Main Street Gallery at 263-6658. This class is limited to the first 10 registrants.
Free proctoring available at Lakeport Library
LAKEPORT — Free proctering is available to students who need a proctor for online college exams at the Lakeport Library, 1425 High St. Proctors are generally available on Thursday afternoons. Tickets on sale for Spring Dance Festival
LAKE COUNTY — Tickets are now on sale for the Lake County Arts Council”s 30th annual Spring Dance Festival. There will be three performances this year: 1 and 7 p.m. April 30 and 2 p.m. May 1 at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre.
Ticket prices are $15 general admission and $10 for children 12 and younger. Tickets may be purchased at the Lake County Arts Council”s Main Street Gallery and Catfish Books in Lakeport.
Reserved seats are available at $20 and may be obtained at the theater box office only, open from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursdays. Tickets may be charged by Visa or Mastercard by calling 263-0577.
