KELSEYVILLE — Two people were injured in a head-on collision on Highway 29 just after noon on Wednesday.

Larry Grant, 73, of Clearlake Oaks was traveling northbound on Highway 29 with passenger, Gerald Taylor, 33, of San Francisco in a 2001 black Corvette.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that Grant crossed the double-yellow lines just south of Cruickshank Road for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer driven by a 50-year-old woman from Lower Lake. Her identity was not known at press time.

“I was reading a magazine and I looked up and noticed we were going kind of sideways,” Taylor said. I thought we were going over the cliff.”

Grant was taken via REACH helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. His passenger, Taylor, had a half-dollar-size lump above his eye.

The woman driving the Mountaineer was transported to Sutter Lakeside Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Traffic was reduced to one lane for more than two hours with CHP providing traffic control. Kelseyville Fire Protection District also responded.

Taylor said he and Grant had just left Rite-Aid and were headed out to go car shopping. He said he initially thought two other vehicles were involved in the crash, but he couldn”t tell because it happened so fast. The top of the Corvette was cut open to extract Grant.

The collision is under investigation.
