WINTERS — Time to get healthy. That”s what the Middletown Mustangs are hoping for after dispatching Portola 11-2 in the opening round of the three-team, round-robin Winters Tournament on Thursday in Winters.
Middletown (5-4) snapped a three-game winning streak with the victory, which featured a lot of Eric Schenck. He not only pitched 5 2/3 innings for the victory, but he went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, both coming on a home run to right field in the top of the sixth to give the Mustangs a 7-2 lead.
“It was the Schenck show today,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said.
The Winters Tourn-ament was a turning point for the Mustangs a year ago. They limped in 1-7 and won three of four games. They went on to finish 15-10 and qualify for the North Coast Section playoffs.
Conner Chick drove in four of Middletown”s runs on Thursday with a RBI double in the fourth and a three-run triple during a four-run seventh. Andres Fernandez went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Middletown plays Winters today at 4 p.m.
